I contracted Hulu to learn English some time ago. Recently I am watching American drama Silicon Valley and it’s fun. A programmer in Silicon Valley battle with people using one algorithm. There are a lot of trouble to work in Silicon Valley and he will be a CEO from a programmer. I have only watched 4 episodes.

There are a lot of web site that writes about it so I will write how it is interesting from developer’s point of view.
– “Why development team is composed as such?” Yes, I have that image too,
– “Steve? Of course Jobs.” “Ah, Wozniak…”
– Standard Test Image is on the wall in the main character.
There might be a lot more I didn’t recognize.

The algorithm in the story is loss-less compression algorithm. For example, music file will be only 1.2 MB. What about Shannon’s theorem? But in the episode 4, some people says why does the main character uses DCT to loss-less compression so the staff will explain the detail of the algorithm I believe. I think that uses AI to recognize object or phrases and compress data to text because it can be searched while compressed. But that would not be loss-less. I want to know the algorithm.

I got result of 200th TOEIC and it was 915. Because I achieve the goal, I will try SW exam next. I will write what is TOEIC 900 like at this opportunity.

I had focused Listening and Reading until I marked 800. Then after I went to America to study English for one month, I switched the focus to Speaking and Writing. As a result, it took time but I think I was able to study basic effectively.

Listening: I was not able to understand even half of the dialog when I was 600. But continued watching Friends 5 times per 1 episode, I started to feel TOEIC listening slower gradually. Now I have 900, I cannot concentrate because it is too slow. But in reality, I can understand native people speaking if they speak clearly. I feel I have achieved basic level after long studying.

Reading: I read Harry Potter, Darren Shan, Sidney Sheldon and Technology book, maybe over 50 books in total. Now I can read English without troublesome. Occasionally, I don’t know what language I have read. But in reality, it takes 3 to 4 minutes to read 1 page in English whereas it takes 1 minute to read in Japanese. It is still slow.

Speaking: Some people say TOEIC can’t measure speaking ability (now TOEIC has SW exam, though. But In my opinion, practicing listening and reading raise level of speaking ability. I have been continuing listening and reading then I came to be able to make English sentences. Rather, suddenly I noticed that one day. I started speaking and writing in this state so it was efficient because I input many sentences. I can correct my own English.

Writing: Also, after studying listening and reading, I input sentences so I became to be able to make sentences in a situation. I can also judge which word I should use in a situation because I have seen many words.

As a result, input is important. Maybe only practicing English conversation would be not effective. Come to think of it, I have learned English less longer than native kids. I have to spend a lot of time anyway.

I have taken 200th TOEIC exam. In previous TOEIC, I thought I will graduate LR if I marked over 900 but I didn’t . For today, I did trial examination 3 times on weekend and went to the examination place.

I had high concentration maybe because of trial in the morning. I was able to read answers while listening questions and I had extra 10 minutes in reading. It was the best condition. If the questions were not too easy, I think I will acquire at least 900, I hope… I will take SW after taking 900.

I’ve received TOEIC score. The target was 900 and I got 885. It increased but not enough. I thought I will take SW exam after exceeding 900 but will I try LR exam one more time?

I have taken TOEIC examination for the first time in 3 years. This time I only had TOEIC trial yesterday and I can achieve 90% of correct answers and 900 over on overall points in trial. But I took 820 on previous one in that condition so maybe this time will be the same. The examination itself is easy but the attention span will decrease outside the house. It seems like competing how much I can concentrate.

I will take embedded exam next month. And I will go to America next week. I don’t have time to develop.

I bought many books about software development in the last one month. These days, I was learning only English, so I want to develop some software now. If I could have summer holiday, I’m going to practice Mac development.

I took TOEIC IP exam last week for the first time after going to America. I want to get 900 this time. But when I looked at an eiken 1st grade drill, I was able to understand no words in the choices at first question. Eiken is much harder than TOEIC.

I’ve finished watching all the episodes of Friends. Five years ago, I watched some episode on TV for the first time. After that, I bought DVD and have been watching it. I think watching sitcom is good way to learn English because it has many useful expression that is not in textbooks.

From today, I will write this diary also in English to improve my writing skill. It’s OK to write English diary, but it’s complicated to update. I started writing diary in 1999 and it was common to edit HTML directly. But nowadays there are very few people editing HTML. Besides, I update both Hi-HO and denasu.com every time. I want to do something to change the situation, but I don’t have time.
